AGM Report 2012

Here is a quick summary of the topics covered at the 2012 AGM.

AGM 2012 Chairman’s report

Welcome to the 2012 Bon Accord Steam Engine Club A.G.M. we are delighted to be back at the Broadstraik Inn. And our thanks go to Lesley and the staff for their hospitality.
The committee decided to hold the AGM on a Saturday again so that club members can enjoy a meal and socialise with friends afterwards. I would like to thank John Shewell for
providing the slide show of the clubs activities which will hopefully fill us with enthusiasm for the year ahead.

Our Steam Fair, which we held in June experienced the same challenges as many other local events, increased costs and reduced numbers of visitors through the gates. The poor summer weather did not help the situation. We were fortunate to actually hold an event, many clubs had to cancel their events altogether. We appreciate that without the hard work and effort our committee members and volunteers devote to the Steam Fair it would not be the success it is. And I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and I hope we can count on them again for 2013.

The fair enjoys increasing numbers of quality exhibits in all categories. We are without doubt now the largest steam event in Scotland. Our success gives additional problems with
space and general lay-out. We were also fortunate not to have the cost of purchasing coal as the Scottish Traction Engine Society had to cancel their event and they donated the coal
to us. We are also indebted to the many local business and individuals who also provide goods and services without their support the fair would not survive.

The date for the 2013 Steam Fair will be 15th & 16th of June.

Dinner Dance

Our Dinner Dance in March is always popular and provides much needed funds for the club, thanks to Michael and Andrew for their outstanding efforts. Andrew tells me they have booked the Airport Thistle hotel for the 9th of March. No doubt they will be chasing you to sell tickets early next year.

New Website

Phil Brown has set up a completely new website for the club which looks very impressive. Members are asked to send any items of interest to Phil so that he can keep it live and
interesting. E-mail: website@bonaccordsteamclub.co.uk

Road Run

We are grateful to Garry Scott and his family for arranging the Spey Valley road run in May. Garry’s family supplied a hearty breakfast at their premises at Sherriffmill before
setting off to RAF Lossiemouth where we given a tour of the facilities and was treated view and board a Sea King helicopter. We then set off to the Knockomie Hotel in Forres for
lunch. From there we travelled to Grantown on Spey for an overnight stop. Returning to Elgin the following day. The event was well run and huge success, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Our plans for 2013 Steam Fair

The National Trust has been concerned about the damage to the site and have agreed to put a new double gate into the field adjacent to the main ring (currently where we have the
stationary engines.) this will allow us to put the whole event in one field and hopefully have a central focus with the exhibits in close proximity. This should solve the problem we
have with some sections feeling left out. We aim to start planning the new lay-out early in the New Year.

Our financial position is at a critical stage, (Fiona our Treasurer will go over the accounts in a moment). We have employed the services of George Walker Event Management Ltd to
arrange sponsorship for us. They have produced a very professional brochure with various packages available. Hopefully this should provide the necessary funding required.

Accounts for 2012

Treasurer, Fiona Fraser presented the year end accounts which show a loss over the year of £1,573.08. This would have been greater without the profit made at the Dinner Dance.
A full set of the accounts is available for members by applying to Fiona – e-mail: treasurer@bonaccordsteamclub.co.uk She assured members that there were sufficient funds in the bank accounts to stage next year’s Fair.

Election of Committee Members

After over 30 years as a club member and at least 20 serving on the committee Charlie Henderson has decided for health reasons to take a well earned rest. We wish him all the best on
his retirement and I’m sure he will still be around at our events keeping a watchful eye on things. All other members of the committee have agreed to stand for re-election and we have
had three nominations for new Committee members:

  • Evan Smart
  • Gary Thomson
  • Mark Allan

These nominations were approved by members present and they were thanked for their willingness to join the committee and give their invaluable assistance with next year’s events.
