Steam @ Alford 2017

GTM Sentinel being towed

Following on from the success of the Steam@Alford event that was held at the Grampian Transport Museum last October, the Bon Accord Steam Engine Club and Grampian Transport Museum have teamed up again to stage Steam@Alford on Sunday 8th October 2017.

Around 20 locally based steam engines will attend for demonstrations and display in the museum arena. The museum’s policy of maximum access will extend to the event with a chance to talk to enthusiastic owners, climb aboard, footplate rides and rides aboard the world’s oldest operational Sentinel steam waggon.

There will be a talk delivered in front of the grandstand to explain the workings of a traction engine and followed by a Q&A session.

During the afternoon a number of trials and demonstrations will be staged with expert commentary.

Heilan Laddie

The oldest engine is ‘Prosper Gem’ a General Purpose Engine that was built by Fowlers of Leeds dating from 1908. There are several steam waggons including The Barracks Steam Museum’s Foden of 1924 and known as ‘Heilan Laddie’. This popular local vehicle has travelled far and wide under its own steam to events throughout Britain.

Steam rollers are well represented and a curious hybrid known as the ‘Puddock’ returns to the traction engine scene after a major refit. This engine began life as a steam roller but was adapted many years ago into a powerful steam tractor sporting pneumatic tyres.

The day will have plenty to do and see for the whole family including ample refreshments, a massive heavy haulage inflatable and a models tent. There is even to be a water dowsing demonstration!

Gavin Low on 'Alfie'

Steam @ Alford opens at 10am with steam raising until 11am and activities thereafter. The museum itself is included in the single budget admission fee of just £8 for Adults and just £1 for children. Free car parking can be found on site by following temporary signs.

Terriers Wanted!

One of this year’s events at Castle Fraser will be Terrier racing, and we are looking for visitors to bring their terrier to take part.

An enjoyable event for Terriers and spectators alike, this is a great way to get involved with this year’s steam fair!

Period Costume Competition

In a new event for 2017 we will see exhibitors compete for the title of best period costume.

Dressing in an outfit befitting of the era of their exhibit, and judged by members of the committee, it is certainly something different for the Steam Fair, and should add to both the exhibitor and visitor experience!
